International Writers Inspiring Change featured book review: Talon: On the Wing (Book II of the Talon children's adventure series) by award-winning author Gigi Sedlmayer

Updated: Sep 23

The adventure continues...

In Talon: On the Wing, Book II in the Talon children's adventure fantasy series by Gigi Sedlmayer, we are once again drawn into the world of a young Peruvian girl by the name of Matica, who has befriended a family of condors. Matica, as we come to learn, is smaller than most of the children in her village and has always felt out of place because of this, but her special relationship with the condors, particularly Talon, casts her into the spotlight - drawing crowds to watch as he takes flight, something no one thought ever possible. In Book II we follow Matica and the condors through both adventurous flights into stormy mountains, and the daily routines of life, as Matica and the condors come to know one another even better. The author does a nice job of giving the reader the sensation of flight as Matica holds onto Talon's neck as he soars through the skies and over the terrain. This is a very simple read and an inspiring one for children. It invites the imagination to envision this special relationship between people and other creatures and reminds us of just how vital it is to protect our beautiful nature and all its species.

Gisela (Gigi) Sedlmayer was born on 19 May 1944 in Potsdam, a suburb of Berlin in Germany.

Her family escaped to the West just before the infamous wall went up. They moved around in Germany until finally settling in Munich where Gigi studied architectural drafting and met Albert in 1965, marrying in December 1967. She worked as a civil drafts person in various private consultancies in Munich.

May 1975, Gigi and her husband moved to New Zealand. Because of language challenges, she started a handicraft business. As a speciality, she made colorful parrots of which she sold thousands in a few years.

May 1989, they became adoptive parents of twin girls from Fiji.

September 1992, they moved to Australia.

November 1993 Gigi was diagnosed with cancer. By the grace of God, she survived and seeing her husband writing the story about the adoption, she started to write short stories for competition since her English became increasingly better.

She entered them in competitions and often got very good reports back, which gave her confidence to go on writing. One day the idea for the TALON series came to her and she spent the next several years bringing the story and the characters to life.
